desolate city - building a setting

One thing that I am actively working and struggling with, but realizing more and more is very important, is that a strong setting will strengthen your work. The backdrop of where a character is located can give the reader a more accurate feel of the setting and mood as well as give a stronger sense of reality. Knowing this I've undergone a study in land/cityscapes. Recently I've been spending a lot of time staring at the city, taking pictures, and coming home to making an attempt to replicate it. This picture above is an example of one of the sketches i did of Eydis interacting with the environment.

Interesting side note, in doing these styled character/example sheets I'm beggining to get a sense of asthetic that i may attempt in the novel. Though i still dont have a set color scheme, I've realized something developing in my style. Working in pencil seems to give a looseness that i've grown fond of lately, unlike most of my previous work. This gives it a little less of a cartoony feel which really is ideal for this project. Talking with ali, tossing ideas back and forth, I've come to realize this is going whole concept start to finish is going to take several years, but it will be several years of growth and development; all of which you will be a part of along the way.

  1. I hadn't seen this one but you did a good job capturing enough details with the angles and lines of the buildings. I really like the monochromatic feel of it and think u should consider keeping that as your sylistic theme. I honestly couldn't come up with another way of saying that ...

  2. "Stylistic theme" is close enough to "aesthetic". Really though, it might be cool and original (plus a bit easier to color), but idk at the same time I'm debating if it would lack in other realms. it definitely will keep hold of the mood, for most of the story, but idk if will accidentally mute out other aspects. For instance, not all the characters and what not are going to be as morose as the lead character. Any thought on that?

  3. Yeah I definitely considered that as well. It might work for certain parts of the story but I'm sure there are times where it just won't work and you'll need more vibrant colors to effectively depict the narration. Maybe you can alternate depending on what's going on. You'll probably figure this out more as you continue to sketch out different ideas.

  4. it is a possibility that I'll do some of the strips like this just to set the mood for certain sections. I am growing attached to the way these look.. and they aren't even completed pieces!
